Balancing Security and Privacy in BYOD

According to Forrester Research, more than half of North American and European organizations are developing bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies in the workplace. However, letting employees use their personal mobile devices for work-related purposes can cause problems relating to company security policies, laws and employee privacy perceptions.

Many businesses, for example, have deployed enterprise mobility management (EMM) platforms. These EMM platforms improve data management and allow them to erase mobile device data remotely—in the case of stolen or lost company-issued devices. Still, this can be challenging as employees don’t want their personal information to be either accessed or wiped in the process. Moreover, employees don’t want their private text messages, call logs, emails and photos archived with corporate information.

To help overcome these challenges, businesses are increasingly selecting secure mobile apps that are integrated with EMM platforms—while using a “persona” architecture that separates business data from personal data.
